India a country where 29.5 % of total population lives below the poverty line as written by The Rangarajan committee, problems of overeating, overweight and obesity were thought to be a remote issue. But the latest study published brings out a shocking and alarming truth that we are just behind the most developed country in having the maximum number of obese patients. It is important to know that there are some factual reasons behind the rise in other extreme health problems in food chain. The current lifestyle changes among Indians are drastic and together with callous attitude toward personal healthcare have brought this alarming rate in last decade.
Our next generation’s palate loves to lick burgers, pizzas, fries, pastas, mayonnaise which are not only high on calorie but also contains excessive salt and oil. Junk foods coupled with rising alcohol intake, sedentary lifestyle and decreasing health awareness are leading us to silent self-destruction, making one in every five Indian men and women either obese or overweight. In order to fight from it, one needs to understand the problem of Obesity and its treatment.
What is OBESITY
Obesity is a condition that is associated with having an excess of body fat, defined by genetic and environmental factors that are difficult to control when dieting. We measure it by calculating BMI (Body mass Index). One can measure one’s own BMI and find out from the charts that whether one is obese/ overweight/normal.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTHCARE PROBLEMS WITH OBESITY
Being overweight or obese isn’t a cosmetic problem. These conditions greatly raise your risk for other health problems. Plus we need to remove our taboo that overweight is a sign of prosperity. Obesity is a serious, chronic disease that can have a negative effect on many systems in your body. People who are overweight or obese have a much greater risk of developing serious conditions. Every excess gain of weight decreases life expectancy. Obese individuals are hard to find among elderly population because of this.
WHAT ARE BARIATRIC SURGERIES
Bariatric surgery are now classified as Metabolic surgery (weight loss surgery) and includes a list of procedures performed on obese people. The principle of weight loss surgery is reducing size of stomach by either putting up a band (Gastric Band ) or a balloon or removing a large portion of stomach ( Sleeve gastrectomy) coupled with bypass procedures which causes malabsorption ( Roux-en y Gastric Bypass) (Bilio-Pancreatic Diversion) ( Mini Gastric Bypass).
Studies show the procedures cause significant long-term loss of weight as well as recovery from associated co-morbidities like diabetes, improvement in cardiovascular risk factors, and a reduction in mortality of 23% from 40%.
